On my way home from work I spotted this semi truck with lug nuts on its front wheels that look like giant drill bits. Where they designed to inflict as much damage as possible in an accident?
(Pay no mind to what look like bent tips on some of them, the truck started pulling away from the red light as I snapped the pic and that’s just motion blur.)
Basically, these lug nuts look like they want to drill to the center of the earth.
They look like the tire slashers on James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5.
They look like the giant spikes on the chariots in Ben Hur.
How the hell are these things legal?

Hey, the cops have ‘em, must be for safety.

Because they are “thin” plastic caps that go over the actual lug nuts. They break quite often.

That’s possibly true about every part of a semi truck.

Does Virginia (your dc-ish right?) not have swangas?

What kind of car is that? I’ve never seen Alex Roy in one of those!

I see them all the time. On pickup trucks as well.

I’ve seen this on a lot of trucks lately. I doubt they’d increase damage all that much as I can’t see them being much more than thin caps. My guess is they’re just some extra incentive for idiots to stay out of their blindspots.

All the ones I have seen are plastic that would lose a battle against a Hyundai hub-cap.

Fiat Coupé, that particular one was used in a Top Gear episode where they had to make cop cars

Fiat Coupé, designed by Chris Bangle of BMW fame.

I make comments about DC because I grew up in Maryland and still visit my family out there, but I live in Madison, WI.
I thought of swangas but these seem like they’re attached to a more dangerous vehicle.

Oh ok. To be honest with you I hate swangas and all sticky outy hub cap thingys. All I see is my paint getting destroyed.

I suspect those are plastic so they won’t impale the other car or a pedestrian in case of accident. As I suspected after quick googling, they are chrome plastic https://www.iowa80.com/DirectionsWEB/…
